If you’re one of the 42 million self-employed people or one of the 25+ million small businesses in the United States, you are most likely trying to figure out how to keep your businesses afloat by maintaining existing customers, developing new relationships resulting in new clients or simply letting people know you are “open”.
Virtual Networking
In times of crisis especially, it’s important to build up your network and increase exposure.
We might not be able to meet in person in the wake of COVID-19, but virtual networking is a viable (and effective) alternative.
Here’s what you need to know:
Virtual networking is an interactive gathering that happens online, typically using a service like Zoom or Google Hangouts. Unlike an in-person event, virtual networking isn’t limited to a single location. Attendees can login and attend from anywhere in the world, if they have Internet access.
“Online networking is a phenomenon that really has just started to reach its stride.” Dr. Ivan Misner, founder of the world’s largest business networking organization BNI (Business Networking International)
Meeting online allows a great deal of customization (you can make it look like you’re gathering at the Taj Mahal if you want to!) and it’s highly cost-effective. Services are often very inexpensive, if not free.
Effective Online Networking
Some people balk at the idea of online meetings: They don’t like how they look onscreen, or they feel awkward talking into a mic.
Here’s the bottom line: If you can network in person, you can do it on the Internet.
It’s pretty much the same process, only with the advantages of not having to hop in your car and drive to a meeting location or pay venue fees!
Still unsure? Here are some tips for holding an effective online meeting, whether it’s person to person or in a group:
1) Jump right in
Meeting online can go one of two ways: It’s either video-based or text-based. Whether you’re talking out loud or typing, don’t be afraid to dive right in.
Introduce yourself right away. Most online networking events come with a time limit, and you want to use all those minutes getting to know the person on the other end.
The exception? Group meetings – like BNI – are typically led by a moderator with an agenda that will layout the format and content, when individual members are to speak and for how long.
2) Go in Prepared
You wouldn’t show up to your normal BNI meeting unprepared. You shouldn’t go into a virtual environment without doing some legwork, either.
Write up a brief introduction for yourself and try to memorize it beforehand. Try to keep it to just a few sentences and remember the BNI Sales Manager Minute formula: Introduction, focus area, story, specific referral, memory hook.
If you’re in a video situation, you’ll be able to give your pitch smoothly and confidently.
If your networking meeting is text-based, you can simply cut and paste your intro right into the chat box.
3) Know What You’re Going to Say
Keith Ferrazzi said, “The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity.”
If you go into a networking situation – real life OR online – only thinking about what you can say about yourself, you’re doing it wrong. Your goal should be to listen and learn what other members need and, most importantly, how to help them attain their goals.
To that end, before you start your online networking journey, come up with a few key questions you can ask others to get them talking. Keep in mind that open-ended questions often spark the most interesting conversation: A simple “why?” can go a long way.
4) Stay Positive
These are new and uncharted times for everyone: Be positive … Be supportive … Be helpful!!
When you enter your online chat, bring a positive attitude. Even if the person on the other end can’t see you smile, they’ll be able to hear it in your voice and sense your optimistic vibe.
5) Don’t Forget to Follow Up
We may not be able to go out and grab a coffee these days, but there are plenty of things we CAN do to foster relationships:
Use this time at home to build your network, strengthen connections, and think about how you can help others within your group.
